Project Cost Accountant
Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Compensation: $80,000 – $95,000 annually
We are seeking a detail-driven, results-oriented Project Cost Accountant to join our construction management team and play a critical role in ensuring the financial success of our projects. This is not a “sit behind the desk and crunch numbers” position—this is an opportunity to become a strategic partner in the construction process, providing valuable insight, analysis, and recommendations that keep projects profitable, compliant, and on track.
As the financial steward of our job sites, you will be responsible for tracking and analyzing every cost that touches a project—from preconstruction estimates to final close-out—while ensuring alignment with budgets, schedules, and company objectives. You’ll work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and the executive team, translating complex financial data into clear, actionable information that supports informed decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
-
Project Cost Tracking & Reporting: Monitor, record, and analyze all project costs, ensuring accurate coding and allocation in the accounting system.
-
Budget Oversight: Assist in establishing project budgets, monitor variances, and work with project teams to manage and control costs throughout the lifecycle of each job.
-
Forecasting: Prepare monthly cost-to-complete reports, cash flow projections, and financial forecasts, identifying potential risks and opportunities.
-
Change Order Management: Track and verify change orders, ensuring timely billing and proper cost recovery.
-
Subcontractor & Vendor Coordination: Review and process subcontractor billings, vendor invoices, and purchase orders for accuracy and contract compliance.
-
Job Cost Reconciliation: Conduct regular reconciliations between the project management system and the accounting system to maintain integrity of financial data.
-
Financial Compliance: Ensure all project financial practices adhere to GAAP, internal controls, and contractual requirements.
-
Close-Out Support: Assist with final job cost reporting, lien releases, and audit preparation for completed projects.
Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
-
Minimum 3–5 years of accounting experience in the construction industry (commercial, multi-family, or industrial preferred).
-
Solid understanding of job cost accounting principles, contract administration, and construction billing practices (AIA, T&M, GMP, etc.).
-
Proficiency with accounting and project management software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Procore, Viewpoint, or similar).
-
Advanced Excel skills with the ability to create pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and data-driven reports.

Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
